ABSTRACT Active flow control for aerofoils has been proven to be an effective way to improve the aerodynamic performance of aircraft. A conceptual hybrid design with surfaces embedded with Shape-Memory Alloy (SMA) and trailing Macro Fibre Composites (MFC) is proposed to implement active flow control for aerofoils. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model has been built to explore the feasibility and potential performance of the proposed conceptual hybrid design. Accordingly, numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the unsteady flow characteristics by dynamic morphing rather than using classical static simulations and complicated coupling. The results show that camber growth by SMA action could cause an evident rise of C l and C d in the take-off/landing phases when the Angle-of-Attack (AoA) is less than 10°. The transient tail vibration behaviour in the cruise period when using MFC actuators is studied over wide ranges of frequency, AoA and vibration amplitude. The buffet frequency is locked in by the vibration frequency, and a decrease of 1.66–2.32% in C d can be achieved by using a proper vibration frequency and amplitude.

Porous electrodes in microfluidic fuel cell (MFC) operate with nonuniform reaction rate. It is intriguing to improve the utilization degree of the porous electrodes. In this work, a three-dimensional computational model is developed for MFC with flow-through porous electrodes. Characteristics of the reaction rate distributions under different electrode geometries are examined. The results show that reaction rate varies noticeably along the electrode width direction, but minimally along the electrode length direction. High reaction rate region locates in the vicinity of the interface between the porous electrode and the middle channel. A relatively high aspect ratio, defined as the ratio of the electrode length to width, is beneficial to improve the utilization degree of the porous electrodes. Yet, concentration losses increase due to the decreased fluid velocity. Considering the cell performance, optimal electrode aspect ratios are derived for the anode and cathode, respectively.

Motivated by earlier discoveries, this study aims to enhance the properties of bioplastic films from two combined plant proteins (proteoposites) by incorporating natural additives, microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), and olive stone powder (OSP). To demonstrate the effect of the protein structure on interactions with additives, binding affinities of corn (zein) and soy proteins with MFC/OSP lignocellulosic constituents were investigated using computational protein–ligand docking. The obtained results indicate favorable interactions of zein macromolecules with lignin, while soy proteins interact more readily with cellulose and hemicellulose. Computational findings were validated by mechanical testing of the modified OSP and MFC proteoposites, where most property (tensile stress) improvements are revealed for the films where lignin-containing OSP is incorporated into zein. Furthermore, a reliable machine-learning-based quantitative structure–activity relationship model to predict the tensile stress of MFC-modified proteoposites was established to effectively predict experimental outcomes [>70% accuracy (R2)]. As a result, adding MFC into the soy protein fraction of proteoposites enhances mechanical performance and barrier properties. Overall, this study provides valuable knowledge on a sustainable approach to making bioplastics from combined zein and soy proteins modified with natural lignocellulosic additives.

Computational and experimental studies have been performed to investigate the effects of current collector design on the performance of microfluidic fuel cell (MFC) with flow-through porous electrodes. Characteristics of electron transport in MFC with flow-through porous electrodes are investigated based on a three-dimensional computational model. The lateral electron transport in the porous electrode is found to encounter high resistance. To improve the cell performance, influences of different current collector design parameters on the transport resistances are examined. Physical origins for the influences of different design parameters are also discussed. The results demonstrate that current collector position is the most influential factor due to the non-uniform flow rate distribution. In the experimental study, cell performances revealed maximum power density when current collectors were located at the high flow rate region. An increase of 61% was observed when the current collectors moved from the conventional exposed ends of the electrodes to the high flow rate regions in the electrode active area. Based on the results, some general rules are set for the current collector designs of MFCs.

With the proliferation of computationally powerful edge devices, edge computing has been widely adopted for wide-ranging computational tasks. Among these, edge artificial intelligence (AI) has become a new trend, allowing local devices to work cooperatively and build deep learning models. Federated learning is one of the representative frameworks in distributed machine learning paradigms. However, there are several major concerns with existing federated learning paradigms. Existing distributed frameworks rely on a central server to coordinate the computing process, where such a central node may raise security concerns. Federated learning also relies on several assumptions/requirements, e.g., the independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) data and model homogeneity. Since more and more edge devices are able to train lightweight models with local data, such models are normally heterogeneous. To tackle these challenges, in this article, we develop a blockchain-empowered federated learning framework that enables learning in a fully decentralized manner while taking the model heterogeneity and data heterogeneity into account. In particular, a federated learning framework with a heterogeneous calibration process, i.e., Model and Feature Calibration (FL-MFC), is developed to enable collaboration among heterogeneous models. We further design a two-level mining process using blockchain to enable the secure decentralized learning process. Experimental results show that our proposed system achieves effective learning performance under a fully heterogeneous environment.

The development of high-performance porous electrode is highly desired in microfluidic fuel cells (MFCs) to improve their output for real-world applications. Previous studies have mainly focused on the electrochemical modification of the porous electrodes to enhance their reaction kinetics. Yet, less attention was paid on the optimization of the electrode porous structure for improved mass transport. To identify proper optimization strategies, a computational model of flow-through type MFC with porous electrodes is established in this work and systematic numerical analyses are conducted to compare the effects of the kinetic and structural parameters of the anode and cathode on the cell performance. Simulation results show that the constraint from the anode is more severe and concentration polarization brought by the insufficient mass transfer in the porous electrodes dominates the cell performance. Thus, structure optimization of the porous electrode for enhanced mass transfer is more promising in the performance enhancement of MFCs in comparison with the electrochemical modification. The specific surface area of the anode is identified as the most influencing factor. After proper structure optimization, an increase of 62.2% can be obtained in the current density at 0.8 V, which is three times of that in the electrochemical modification case. Based on the results, useful guidance is provided for the future development of MFCs. Novelty Statement A computational model of MFC with flow-through porous electrodes is established. Simulation results show that structure optimization of the porous electrode for enhanced mass transfer is more promising in the performance enhancement of MFCs in comparison with the electrochemical modification. After proper structure optimization, an increase of 62.2% can be obtained in the current density at 0.8 V.

A new piezoelectric composite, macro fiber composite (MFC) is recombined with piezoceramic fibers, an epoxy resin basal body, and an interdigitated electrode. It has been widely applied in vibration reduction and deformation control of thin-walled structures, due to its great deformability and flexibility. Research on its actuation performance is mostly concentrated on the MFC actuating force calculation based on classical plate theory (CPT), and the overall modeling of MFC and its structure. However, they have some deficiencies in the tedious calculating process and neglect of shear deformation, respectively. To obtain a precise MFC actuating force, the sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT) is adopted to deduce the MFC actuating force formula, and global–local displacement distribution functions are introduced to help the MFC laminated plate structure satisfy the deformation compatibility and stress balance. For instance, in the end displacement calculation of the MFC laminated beam structure. The experimental result of the MFC laminated beam is compared with those of the MFC actuating force based on SSDT and on CPT, which indicates that the MFC actuating force formula based on SSDT can reach higher computational accuracy.

In this paper, we present a new control technique for sustaining dynamic voltage stability by effective reactive power control and coordination of distributed energy resources (DERs) in microgrids. The proposed control technique is based on model-free control (MFC), which has shown successful operation and improved performance in different domains and applications. This paper presents its first use in the voltage stability of a microgrid setting employing multiple synchronous generator (SG)-based and power electronic (PE)-based DERs. MFC is a computationally efficient, data-driven control technique that does not require modelling of the different components and disturbances in the power system. It is utilized as an online controller to achieve the dynamic voltage stability of a microgrid system under different disturbances and fault conditions. A 21-bus microgrid system fed by multiple DERs is considered as a case study and the overall dynamic voltage stability is investigated using time-domain dynamic simulations. Numerical results show that the proposed MFC provides improvements on the dynamic load bus voltage profiles and requires less computational time as compared to the traditional enhanced microgrid voltage stabilizer (EMGVS) scheme. Due to its simplicity and low computational requirement, MFC can be easily implemented in resource-constrained computing devices such as smart inverters.

Video and image data is the most important and widely used format of communication today. It is used as evidence and authenticated proof in different domains such as law enforcement, forensic studies, journalism, and others. With the increase of video applications and data, the problem of forgery in video and images has also originated. Although a lot of work has been done on image forgery, video forensic is still a challenging area. Videos are manipulated in many ways. Frame insertion, deletion, and frame duplication are a few of the major challenges. Moreover, in the perspective of duplicated frames, frame rate variation and loop detection are also key issues. Identification of forged duplication frames for large videos with variant frame rates in real-time is not applicable due to computational limitations, lack of generalization, and low-performance accuracy. This research has investigated the problem of frame duplication with varied frame rates using a deep learning approach. A novel deep learning framework consisting of Inflated 3D (I3D) and Siamese-based Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is proposed to resolve the aforementioned issues. The first step in the proposed framework is to extract the features and convert videos into frames. I3D network receives an original and a forged video to detect frame-to-frame duplication. Then multiple frames are merged to create a sequence. This sequence is passed to Siamese-based RNN which is used for the sequence to sequence forgery detection in video. Media Forensic Challenge (MFC) is a relatively new dataset with various frame rates, and a huge volume of videos. MFC and Image Retrieval and Analysis Tool (VIRAT) datasets are used for training and validation of the proposed model. The accuracy of the proposed method with the VIRAT dataset is 86.6% and with the MFC dataset 93%. The comparative analysis with state-of-the-art approaches has shown the robustness of the proposed approach.

Increased frontal midline theta activity generated by the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is induced by conflict processing in the medial frontal cortex (MFC). There is evidence that theta band transcranial alternating current stimulation (θ-tACS) modulates ACC function and alters inhibitory control performance during neuromodulation. Multi-electric (256 electrodes) high definition θ-tACS (HD θ-tACS) using computational modeling based on individual MRI allows precise neuromodulation targeting of the ACC via the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), and optimizes the required current density with a minimum impact on the rest of the brain. We therefore tested whether the individualized electrode montage of HD θ-tACS with the current flow targeted to the mPFC-ACC compared with a fixed montage (non-individualized) induces a higher post-modulatory effect on inhibitory control. Twenty healthy subjects were randomly assigned to a sequence of three HD θ-tACS conditions (individualized mPFC-ACC targeting; non-individualized MFC targeting; and a sham) in a double-blind cross-over study. Changes in the Visual Simon Task, Stop Signal Task, CPT III, and Stroop test were assessed before and after each session. Compared with non-individualized θ-tACS, the individualized HD θ-tACS significantly increased the number of interference words and the interference score in the Stroop test. The changes in the non-verbal cognitive tests did not induce a parallel effect. This is the first study to examine the influence of individualized HD θ-tACS targeted to the ACC on inhibitory control performance. The proposed algorithm represents a well-tolerated method that helps to improve the specificity of neuromodulation targeting of the ACC.

Electric power networks are large and highly nonlinear dynamical systems that present unique challenges to control design. Though there is a large number of dynamic models for power system stability and control, many models are only useful with right assumptions and wrong for other tasks. Moreover, the dynamic behavior of the grid is increasingly complex under the banner of smart grids. These lead to the difficulty of developing appropriate dynamic modeling, and thus an efficient control strategy. To avoid such modeling challenges, this work presents a novel dynamic voltage control strategy based on a model-free control (MFC) approach, requiring no modeling procedure. In particular, it focuses on fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) events, which require complex and accurate dynamic load models to replicate such events. This work utilizes MFC as an online controller to achieve the desired voltage stability under the FIDVR event. The proposed MFC strategy allows simple implementation and low computational cost for efficient mitigation of FIDVR. For benchmarking, a reasonably accurate dynamic performance model is explored. Simulation results with the IEEE 57 bus test network demonstrate the enhanced dynamic voltage profile for load buses having induction motors with the support of reactive power resources.

The mobile fog computing (MFC) network that integrates unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) fully exerts its advantages of flexible deployment, load balance, and rapid response. Under complex network environment, proposing a reasonable offloading model and according resource optimization of the MFC network is important to satisfy high-requirement offloading standard. In this paper, a multilevel MFC offloading model where UAV and fog nod undertake relay nodes and offloading computing nodes are established for computation-intensive and latency-critical tasks, considering heterogeneous network selection , dynamic channel quality and central cloud access . With the total system utility optimality function including reward function maximization as the goal, the MDP algorithm is applied to solve the best offloading decision of the computing task and the balanced load mode of the MFC network. Finally, the simulation section verifies the excellent performance of the proposed multilevel MFC offloading model in network resource utilization. Simulation results show that the model can optimize the relative position of service nodes in MFC network and ensure the offloading reliability of terminal equipment.

This paper proposes the combination of two data-driven techniques, namely virtual reference feedback tuning (VRFT) and model-Free Control (MFC) in terms of the VRFT of MFC algorithms dedicated to servo systems. VRFT ensures the automatic optimal computation of the parameters of three MFC algorithms represented by intelligent proportional (iP), intelligent proportional-integral (iPI), and intelligent proportional-integral-derivative (iPID) controllers. The combination of MFC and VRFT leads to a novel mixed MFC-VRFT approach. The approach is validated by experimental results related to the angular speed control of modular servo system laboratory equipment. The performance of the control systems with the MFC algorithms (iP, iPI, and iPID controllers) tuned by the mixed MFC-VRFT approach is compared with that of control systems with MFC algorithms tuned by a metaheuristics gravitational search algorithm (GSA) optimizer, and of control systems with I, PI and PID controllers optimally tuned by VRFT and GSA in the same optimization problem.

Silica-epoxy nanocomposites were prepared via an “in-situ” sol-gel synthesis process and a phosphorus (P) flame-retardant i.e. 6H-dibenz[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphorin,6-[(1-oxido-2,6,7-trioxa-1-phosphabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-4-yl)methoxy]-, 6-oxide (DP) and melamine (Mel) were further added to the matrix to improve its fire performance. The main components of epoxy resin were bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) and isophorone diamine (IPDA) hardener. The addition of DP as well as silica alone into the epoxy system stopped the melt dripping phenomena in the vertical fire test (UL 94), however, the addition of melamine was crucial for achieving the highest fire classification (UL 94-V0 rating). The presence of DP and Mel in the silica-epoxy nanocomposite promoted a large reduction (ranging from 53% up to 80%) in the heat release rate (HRR) and a delay (up to 31%) in the ignition time in the cone calorimetry experiments. Improved fire performance of the epoxy system was attributed to i) a condensed phase activity of silica, DP and melamine to form a protective thermal barrier during combustion and ii) a minor gas phase flame inhibition activity of DOPO component of DP. The mechanical characterization of the epoxy nanocomposites through tensile tests showed that the addition of DP increases the stiffness of the epoxy resin, resulting in a strong increase of Young modulus (up to 32%) and in a slight decrease of fracture strength, elongation at break and toughness. An increased glass transition temperature (up to 8%) of the epoxy system possibly due to hydrogen bonds and polar interactions of DP with the matrix was also observed.

The past 50 years have witnessed a massive expansion in the demand and application of pesticides. However, pesticides are difficult to be completely degraded without intervention hence the pesticide residue could pose a persistent threat to non-target organisms in many aspects. To aim at the problem of the abuse of pesticide products and excessive pesticide residues in the environment, chemical and biological degradation methods are widely developed but are scaled and insufficient to solve such a pollution. In recent years, bio-degradative tools instructed by synthetic biological principles have been further studied and have paved a way for pesticide degradation. Combining the customized design strategy and standardized assembly mode, the engineering bacteria for multi-dimensional degradation has become an effective tool for pesticide residue degradation. This review introduces the mechanisms and hazards of different pesticides, summarizes the methods applied in the degradation of pesticide residues, and discusses the advantages, applications, and prospects of synthetic biology in degrading pesticide residues.

Sustainable stormwater management approaches in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) allow a source control to handle the quality and quantity of the runoff at local level or near the source. The most popular technologies applied in Europe are green roofs, porous pavements, retention basins and bioswales/raingardens. In this article, two of these solutions (retention tank with reuse, and rain garden, respectively), applied to single dwelling case studies in a suburban area in the Silesia Region (Poland), are illustrated and analyzed. The selected cases consider technical and economic aspects as the most important factors for decision on the selection of onsite stormwater management approach. Both systems have been operational for approximately two years. The retention tank proved a good solution, reducing stormwater overflows and allowing local water reuse for lawn irrigation; however, investment and maintenance costs in this case are relatively higher. The raingarden proved to work efficiently in this small scale implementation and implied much lower initial investment and costs. The economic sustainability of these interventions at single dwelling scale was analyzed, showing interesting returns, with outcome depending on the degree of possible water reuse (lower water bills) and availability of fiscal or fee incentives. Introduction of financial incentive schemes will encourage homeowners and developers to implement stormwater control solutions, allowing rapid amortization of investment costs with additional benefits to the community, such as reduced environmental impact of stormwater overflows and possible economies in the construction and management of stormwater systems.

The colorimetric identification of pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria in cell culture is commonly performed using the redox mediator N , N , N ', N '-tetramethyl- para -phenylene-diamine (TMPD) in the so-called oxidase test, which indicates the presence of bacterial cytochrome c oxidases. The presented study demonstrates the ability of electrochemistry to employ TMPD to detect bacteria and quantify the activity of bacterial cytochrome c oxidases. Cyclic voltammetry studies and chronoamperometry measurements performed on the model organism Bacillus subtilis result in a turnover number, calculated for single bacteria. Furthermore, trace amounts of cytochrome c oxidases were revealed in aerobically cultured Escherichia coli , which to our knowledge no other technique is currently able to quantify in molecular biology. The reported technique could be applied to a variety of pathogenic bacteria and has the potential to be employed in future biosensing technology.

Herein this study, pure and manganese- (Mn-) doped ZnO (2 wt. %) nanoparticles have been synthesized using the chemical precipitation method and characterized for the photodegradation of methyl green (MG) pollutant dye under natural sunlight. The structural analysis via XRD patterns has revealed that both intrinsic and Mn-doped ZnO (2 wt. %) samples have hexagonal wurtzite structures with appropriate phase purity, clearly indicating the absence of any external impurity. The incorporation of Mn in the host ZnO lattice has decreased the crystallite size (21.10 → 18.76 nm), and nanoparticle-type surface features with sizes in the 50–100 nm range have been observed through FESEM-based surface morphological studies. Both aforementioned observations have merit in providing more active area and a high surface area to volume ratio for photocatalytic reaction. The investigation of photophysical properties indicates that in Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles, the absorption peak is blue-shifted by 5 nm (365 → 360 nm), due to the widening of the bandgap. The degradation kinetics of MG dye follow the pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the degradation efficiency has been observed to be 62.78% mediated by pure ZnO and 66.44% by Mn-doped ZnO (2 wt. %) photocatalyst under 60 minutes of sunlight irradiation. Specifically, the rate of photocatalytic reaction (K) ~0.01792 min -1 and [Formula: see text]~0.97992 has been achieved for pure ZnO, whereas slightly higher (K) ~0.02072 min -1 and [Formula: see text]~0.97299 have been observed for Mn-doped ZnO, respectively. Conclusively, the synergistic interactions with multiple charge transfer pathways, improvement of e − /h + pair charge separation, improved surface area, and efficient generation of hydroxyl radicals are supposed to be responsible for the highly efficient photocatalytic activity of the Mn–doped ZnO photocatalyst for MG dye.

The obligate aerobic nature of Pseudomonas putida, one of the most prominent whole-cell biocatalysts emerging for industrial bioprocesses, questions its ability to be cultivated in large-scale bioreactors, which exhibit zones of low dissolved oxygen tension. P. putida KT2440 was repeatedly subjected to temporary oxygen limitations in scale-down approaches to assess the effect on growth and an exemplary production of rhamnolipids. At those conditions, the growth and production of P. putida KT2440 were decelerated compared to well-aerated reference cultivations, but remarkably, final biomass and rhamnolipid titers were similar. The robust growth behavior was confirmed across different cultivation systems, media compositions, and laboratories, even when P. putida KT2440 was repeatedly exposed to dual carbon and oxygen starvation. Quantification of the nucleotides ATP, ADP, and AMP revealed a decrease of intracellular ATP concentrations with increasing duration of oxygen starvation, which can, however, be restored when re-supplied with oxygen. Only small changes in the proteome were detected when cells encountered oscillations in dissolved oxygen tensions. Concluding, P. putida KT2440 appears to be able to cope with repeated oxygen limitations as they occur in large-scale bioreactors, affirming its outstanding suitability as a whole-cell biocatalyst for industrial-scale bioprocesses.

Following a waste-to-wealth approach, humic acid (HA) was exploited as a flame retardant additive. The effect of its addition alone and in combination with urea (UR) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) on the thermal, fire, and mechanical performances of a bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA)-based epoxy resin modified with (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (AP) and cured with aliphatic isophoronediamine (IDA) has been investigated. Unlike in previous studies, a UL 94-V-0 classification was achieved for epoxy resin containing HA at 6 wt % and APP at only 1 wt % phosphorus (P) loading. The presence of silicon-modified epoxy chains ameliorated the distribution of the biowaste within the resin, and the addition of HA alone avoided melt dripping. Besides, APP and UR promoted a remarkable reduction (up to 52%) of the peak heat release rate (pHRR) values and a significant delay (up to 21%) of the time to ignition in cone calorimetry tests, and hence an increase (up to 1.8 min) of the time to flashover, without any detrimental effect on the overall mechanical behavior. The evolved gas, thermal, and fire analysis was used to propose the combined mode of action of HA, UR, APP, and silicon in the fire performance improvement of the hybrid epoxy system.

Effluents of anaerobic processes still contain valuable components, among which volatile fatty acids (VFAs) can be regarded and should be recovered and/or used further in applications such as microbial electrochemical technology to generate energy/energy carriers. To accomplish the separation of VFAs from waste liquors, various membrane-based solutions applying different transport mechanisms and traits are available, including pressure-driven nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) which are capable to clarify, fractionate and concentrate salts and organics. Besides, emerging techniques using a membrane such as forward osmosis (FO) and supported liquid membrane (SILM) technology can be taken into consideration for VFA separation. In this work, we evaluate these four various downstream methods (NF, RO, FO and SILM) to determine the best one, comparatively, for enriching VFAs from pH-varied model solutions composed of acetic, butyric and propionic acids in different concentrations. The assessment of the separation experiments was supported by statistical examination to draw more solid conclusions. Accordingly, it turned out that all methods can separate VFAs from the model solution. The highest average retention was achieved by RO (84% at the applied transmembrane pressure of 6 bar), while NF provided the highest permeance (6.5 L/m 2 hbar) and a high selectivity between different VFAs.

The 16S rRNA gene works as a rapid and effective marker for the identification of microorganisms in complex communities; hence, a huge number of microbiomes have been surveyed by 16S amplicon-based sequencing. The resolution of the 16S rRNA gene is always considered only at the genus level; however, it has not been verified on a wide range of microbes yet. To fully explore the ability and potential of the 16S rRNA gene in microbial profiling, here, we propose Qscore, a comprehensive method to evaluate the performance of amplicons by integrating the amplification rate, multitier taxonomic annotation, sequence type, and length. Our in silico assessment by a "global view" of 35,889 microbe species across multiple reference databases summarizes the optimal sequencing strategy for 16S short reads. On the other hand, since microbes are unevenly distributed according to their habitats, we also provide the recommended configuration for 16 typical ecosystems based on the Qscores of 157,390 microbiomes in the Microbiome Search Engine (MSE). Detailed data simulation further proves that the 16S amplicons produced with Qscore-suggested parameters exhibit high precision in microbiome profiling, which is close to that of shotgun metagenomes under CAMI metrics. Therefore, by reconsidering the precision of 16S-based microbiome profiling, our work not only enables the high-quality reusability of massive sequence legacy that has already been produced but is also significant for guiding microbiome studies in the future. We have implemented the Qscore as an online service at http://qscore.single-cell.cn to parse the recommended sequencing strategy for specific habitats or expected microbial structures. IMPORTANCE 16S rRNA has long been used as a biomarker to identify distinct microbes from complex communities. However, due to the influence of the amplification region, sequencing type, sequence processing, and reference database, the accuracy of 16S rRNA has not been fully verified on a global range. More importantly, the microbial composition of different habitats varies greatly, and it is necessary to adopt different strategies according to the corresponding target microbes to achieve optimal analytical performance. Here, we developed Qscore, which evaluates the comprehensive performance of 16S amplicons from multiple perspectives, thus providing the best sequencing strategies for common ecological environments by using big data.

Towards chlorinated solvents, the effectiveness of the remediation strategy can be improved by combining a biological approach (e.g., anaerobic reductive dechlorination) with chemical/physical treatments (e.g., adsorption). A coupled adsorption and biodegradation (CAB) process for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal is proposed in a biofilm-biochar reactor (BBR) to assess whether biochar from pine wood (PWB) can support a dechlorinating biofilm by combining the TCE (100 µM) adsorption. The BBR operated for eight months in parallel with a biofilm reactor (BR)-no PWB (biological process alone), and with an abiotic biochar reactor (ABR)-no dechlorinating biofilm (only an adsorption mechanism). Two flow rates were investigated. Compared to the BR, which resulted in a TCE removal of 86.9 ± 11.9% and 78.73 ± 19.79%, the BBR demonstrated that PWB effectively adsorbs TCE and slows down the release of its intermediates. The elimination of TCE was quantitative, with 99.61 ± 0.79% and 99.87 ± 0.51% TCE removal. Interestingly, the biomarker of the reductive dechlorination process, Dehalococcoides mccartyi , was found in the BRR (9.2 × 10 5 16S rRNA gene copies/g), together with the specific genes tceA , bvcA , and vcrA (8.16 × 10 6 , 1.28 × 10 5 , and 8.01 × 10 3 gene copies/g, respectively). This study suggests the feasibility of biochar to support the reductive dechlorination of D. mccartyi , opening new frontiers for field-scale applications.

Twelve COEs, including seven structures reported here for the first time, were investigated for the relationship between their membrane disrupting properties and structural modifications, including the length of the PV backbone and the presence of either a tetraalkylammonium or a pyridinium ionic pendant group. Optical characteristics and interactions with cell membranes were determined using UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies, and confocal microscopy. Toxicity tests on representative Gram-positive ( Enterococcus faecalis ) and Gram-negative ( Escherichia coli ) bacteria reveal generally greater toxicity to E. faecalis than to E. coli and indicate that shorter molecules have superior antimicrobial activity. Increased antimicrobial potency was observed in three-ring COEs appended with pyridinium ionic groups but not with COEs with four or five PV repeat units. Studies with mutants having cell envelope modifications indicate a possible charge based interaction with pyridinium-appended compounds. Fluorine substitutions on COE backbones result in structures that are less toxic to E. coli , while the addition of benzothiadiazole to COE backbones has no effect on increasing antimicrobial function. A weakly membrane-intercalating COE with only two PV repeat units allowed us to determine the synthetic limitations as a result of competition between solubility in aqueous media and association with cell membranes. We describe, for the first time, the most membrane disrupting structure achievable within two homologous series of COEs and that around a critical three-ring backbone length, structural modifications have the most effect on antimicrobial activity.

To achieve technically-feasible and socially-desirable sustainable management of urban areas, new paradigms have been developed to enhance the sustainability of water and its resources in modern cities. Wastewater is no longer seen as a wasted resource, but rather, as a mining ground from which to obtain valuable chemicals and energy; for example, heat energy, which is often neglected, can be recovered from wastewater for different purposes. In this work, we analyze the design and application of energy recovery from wastewater for heating and cooling a building in Brno (Czech Republic) by means of heat exchangers and pumps. The temperature and the flow rate of the wastewater flowing in a sewer located in the proximity of the building were monitored for a one-year period, and the energy requirement for the building was calculated as 957 MWh per year. Two options were evaluated: heating and cooling using a conventional system (connected to the local grid), and heat recovery from wastewater using heat exchangers and coupled heat pumps. The analysis of the scenarios suggested that the solution based on heat recovery from wastewater was more feasible, showing a 59% decrease in energy consumption compared to the conventional solution (respectively, 259,151 kWh and 620,475 kWh per year). The impact of heat recovery from wastewater on the kinetics of the wastewater resource recovery facility was evaluated, showing a negligible impact in both summer (increase of 0.045 °C) and winter conditions (decrease of 0.056 °C).
